Chapter 9: No Cure
(Sylvia's POV)
"But the cure is out there, right?" My voice shakes.
I need to save Kriss, whether I find the cure with help or not.
(Kriss's POV)
Even if it's just...
I saw him in that dream. He was next to me. He was standing there.
He was...alive...
(Sylvia's POV)
(Kriss's POV)
"Why are you here, Talutah."
Her palm hit the side of my face.
A slap.
A deadly slap.
I couldn't stand to see their faces. I couldn't stand to let them know I was the reason he died.
I killed him, didn't I?
I needed that hug. I needed to cry onto someone's shoulder, for them to tell me it'll get better over time.
I needed safety.
It's a spell I found in my mother's book. I knew it was forbidden, but I kept it in my heart.
For times like these.
She shouldn't ever have to know me.
She doesn't need that.
She doesn't need to know who I am at all.
I'm cold-hearted.
I'm selfish.
I should have never set foot here.
I should have never met Kriss.
(Sylvia's POV)
"Okay, so we remember to look for signs of a cure. I know it'll be hard, but we need to try."
"I'll be right back. Glad you remember."
(Sylvia's POV)
"What are you saying? She can't be saved?"
"Or she can't be saved just yet."
"Your little friend can be cured, no doubt. I was cured once before." His voice is rough and jagged, pain seeking ice to cool the wound.
"What do you mean 'cured once before'? I thought you told me she turned herself only."
"She did, but I was hurt too much when her mother disappeared. I turned too."
"I'm so sorry. I didn't know." I fumbled on my words a little. I didn't know he knew about the cure. I didn't know he lost someone to find it.
"It's fine, it was long ago. Back to the cure though."
"But the cure is out there, right?" My voice shakes.
I need to save Kriss, whether I find the cure with help or not.
"I found it through an old friend. He guided me to a source, but they ran out after me. I'm sorry."
"What if there's no cure?"
I'm slowly going. There's no way around it. There's no hope.
I'll be her little pet in no time.
I drift off, my head aching.
This...is when I dream...

Say you'll remember me
Standing in a nice dress, staring at the sunset
Red lips and rosy cheeks
Say you'll see me again...
Even if it's just...
Pretend
"Asho...Asho...Where are you...Asho?"
I saw him in that dream. He was next to me. He was standing there.
He was...alive...

"Oh dearie. It's only me."
Her.
Right now.
Oh god.
(Sylvia's POV)
"We need to act now. We need to find a cure before it's too late."

"I know there's a cure somewhere. Someone's been cured before. We can find it."
Ayana was staring at Carl, hiding her smile. We could all tell there was something there.
"I want to help Kriss. I can't stand seeing her turn...well, red."
And again, the staring continues.
"You know what, let's search tonight. Better late than never." Dan commented, actually paying attention to me.
"Yeah. If we can find it before she turns completely, we can spare her the suffering."
"Agreed. The best thing to do is get to the infection before the infection covers her over."
"Cody's right. I'm willing to help, obviously."
"You know I'm in. Look, I even dressed up for this all."
"If you need me in the forest, I know my way all through the backwoods. I spent one year just traveling around."
"I don't know if bringing everyone along is a phenomenal plan. I mean, I know it'd be great having everyone around, but I think we'll be better off splitting up."
"I totally understand. Obviously, though, Kriss will have to come."
"I'll come for mental support. For some reason, she feels comfortable around me."
"I know I'll definitely come. I missed your last adventure, and I'm not about to miss all the fun."
"We leave in 10 minutes. Give some time for Kriss to rest. Ayana, Dan, Cody, Carl and I will go."
Let's just hope she'll be okay.
Hopefully she never has to deal with her again.
I hope they hurry up and rescue me.
I'm trapped.
"Why are you here, Talutah."
"Well, I decided to have a walk, you see. I was in the neighbourhood."
"You live across the river. What would you need over here?"
Besides me.
"Can't I check on my dear blood-red. Look, you're nearly there."
"I wouldn't even be here if you didn't do this to me!"
She turned away, pissed.
Maybe she copped some of my spit.
"My business is none of yours. I don't need to explain anything."
Her eyes glowed like the moon, her hair waved over her shoulders.
For the first time, she was wearing scarlet red blush.
"Now, my dear, I would appreciate it if you didn't act like a pathetic little girl."
"I'm not pathetic. I'm not little. I just want to find my brother."
"You foolish girl. He's gone, face it."
She raised her palm, the pale skin coated in crimson red gloves, holes revealing her knuckles.
A slap.
A deadly slap.
"What the hell was that for? What do you know about my brother?"
Anger rises in my voice. Tension slips through the cracks in my mouth.
"A far more than you know. This wasn't the first time I met you, love."
What the hell is she talking about?
(Taluath's POV)
I miss him more now. I miss his smile, his laugh, everything about him.
I wish he never died.
If only I never met him.
I couldn't stand to see their faces. I couldn't stand to let them know I was the reason he died.
I killed him, didn't I?
I loved him. I did.
He left me in my moment of weakness.
Love...is weakness...
His mother meant well, but I was angry. I hated anyone who ruined this all.
I hated the Raven.
I needed that hug. I needed to cry onto someone's shoulder, for them to tell me it'll get better over time.
I needed safety.
I was an emotional wreck.
I couldn't bear to see her like that. I couldn't bear her sadness.
I had to wipe her memory of me away.
Kriss couldn't live another day if she knew what I'd done.
I had to take the suffering away.
Or else she'll never forgive me.
"Is everyone ready?"
'Yeah."
"Okay, signs of the cure. Got it."
"Shouldn't we...ya know...go get Kriss."
"I'll be right back. Glad you remember."
The stairs creak under my soft feet, a sign of their age and weakening grace.
"Kriss! Kriss! We're going!"
'Kriss? Are you in your room?"
"I'm coming in whether you like it or not!"
She was silent.
Too silent.
"Kriss?"
A flash of lighting zipped through the room.
"What was that?"
"Calm down Sylvia, it was just something my mother taught me."
"Your mother? You've never really spoken much about her."
"I've never needed to."
"We're ready to go now."
"Let's go. She's turning more blood-red by the minute."
The first place to look was by the abandoned mansion. It was worth a shot.
I just hope we can find help.
I just hope we can save Kriss.
(Kriss's POV)
The group is trying to help, I know.
I just don't know how long I have left.
"Or if I have any time left. Dearie."
